It’s been a rather up-and-down week around here. We are in the throes of ‘June Gloom’ as they call it here in Santa Barbara: days start out grey, cool and uninspiring, until mid-afternoon when the sun burns through and the cloudless sky turns a brilliant cornflower blue. Strange to think of Southern California without constant sunshine, but we’re enjoying this change in the mornings and using it as an excuse to stay in bed just a tad bit longer.
Being nine months pregnant certainly knocks things off-kilter. I’ve been vacillating between bursts of energy (read: incessant nesting and toilet-scrubbing), coupled with bouts of intense exhaustion that leave me sat on our sofa or up in bed, streaming episodes of America’s Test Kitchen and The Good Wife. In an effort to really use up what is in our refrigerator, every meal period has felt like I am a contestant on the Food Network’s Chopped, and there are many texts to Chef Grant throughout the day exclaiming, “What is there to eat in our house? What can I feed the children?!” Thankfully, the kids and Grant keep me in good spirits, and entertain my many meals of rounded-up pantry fare. I can’t wait to get to the farmer’s market this week-end and fill our baskets with fresh produce and other delectable goodies.
Here are a selection of favourites that caught my eye this week (mostly in the wee hours of the morning when I can’t sleep and reach for my iPhone to keep me company)…
On the road with Chris Burkard via Artifact Uprising. His travel photography will blow your mind.
These 2014 iPhone Photography award-winners will make you rethink your all-mighty DSLR.
Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, Lego-styles.
Unsure what to get your dad this Father’s Day? Esquire’s got some ideas.
17 bookstores that matter.
Happy week-end to all!
As 2013 winds to a close, we’re catching up on our favourite photo shoots of the year. Finnlagh’s 5th birthday party was a swashbuckling extravaganza, complete with pirate scavenger hunt, maps, and buried treasure on the beach. For a creative soul like Finnlagh, it seemed just the thing to fire up his imagination and sail us all away on a birthday adventure with him.
We love you so much, darling boy. Thank-you for approaching every day with a bright start and bringing all those around you a fresh perspective on fun and merriment. Dearest, sweetest little lad: five.
A single moment, captured in a photograph. Candid and fleeting, this will always be a special moment in time…

There are days when the rhythm of life is conveyed purely by the senses: eyes to capture the variegated colour of the waves, noses to breathe in the sea air as it hangs in the wind, and ears to remember the crash-and-boom soundtrack of it all. In these moments, there are no words – just togetherness. As you take in the moment with your very best friend, the world, as you experience it, will always be filled with possibilities.
We enjoyed a perfect evening on the American Riviera photographing Alina in her powder pink backstage onesie from Australian Retailer, Tutu du Monde. Alina was lucky enough to win this exquisite piece from a giveaway held by La Petite, a modern kids lifestyle magazine. Can’t wait to share more from her photo shoot in the very near future!

We’re settling in here on the west coast, and waking up each day to breathtaking views of Southern California. Using the mountains and the ocean as our guides, there is so very much to discover, from lush, tropical botanicals and Spanish colonial architecture, to towering palm trees lining the harbour as far as the eye can see…

Papa and our littlest one, gazing outward at the Pacific Ocean. Placid, sun-kissed mornings, toes in the sea — the finest of daily rituals.
